Description:
The IDT 10G serial buffer is the industry's first Serial RapidIOŽ-based memory solution. When coupled with the IDT pre-processing switch (PPS), this wireless chipset solution offers an optimized interconnection that accelerates DSP performance by up to 20%, enabling the cost-effective delivery of advanced DSP-intensive wireless services, such as mobile video, to end consumers. The wireless chipset works in conjunction with digital signal processors (DSPs) and chip-rate processors (CRPs) from various vendors, enabling complete solutions for cellular baseband vendors.

The high-throughput environments of 3G wireless base stations rely on multiple digital signal processors (DSPs) to deliver value-added services, which require high speed and large amounts of memory to execute consecutive sample-compare functions. The IDT 10G serial buffer solves the sample-compare issue and can:

  • Dramatically improve performance by eliminating local memory bottlenecks

  • Reduce silicon area by eliminating or reducing the need for local memory entirely

  • Significantly simplify design by eliminating complex memory management schemes only 16 I/Os are needed, dramatically reducing the bill of materials (BOM) compared to alternative approaches requiring 100 I/Os

The 10G serial buffer has 18 Mbits of internal memory, plus connection to 72 Mbits of external QDR SRAM. This sum total of 90 Mbits enables a DSP to compare consecutive data samples in one calculation, eliminating the time-consuming nested calculations required by capacity-limited local memories.

The 10G serial buffer also contains intelligent monitoring and control circuitry that automatically identifies and compensates for dropped data packets to maintain data synchronicity.

To jumpstart software programming and enable early prototyping for quick time to market, IDT also provides a complete development platform, including an advanced mezzanine card (AMC), jointly developed by Texas Instruments (TI), deploying the IDT PPS and four high-performance TI DSPs and demonstrating interoperability. The card offers an expansion port for a daughter supporting other Serial RapidIO endpoints, including the 10G serial buffer.

Availability: The IDT 10G serial buffer is available in a 484-pin BGA package, which is RoHS compliant. For additional product information on the IDT 10G serial buffer, visit www.IDT.com.
