RapidIO Connections - October 2002

President's Message

Dear Members and Associates in the RapidIO Community,

It has been a busy quarter for the RapidIO Trade Association. RedSwitch did a great job hosting our All-Members General Meeting in Santa Clara this August. The Technical Working Group (TWG), Marketing Working Group (MWG) and Flow Control Technical Task Group (FCTG) all held face-to-face meetings as well. I was able to attend many of the sessions and can report that great progress was made in all the meetings.

In the All-Members General Meeting, nine companies gave presentations on their RapidIO™ products. I was impressed by the progress that has been made in developing RapidIO semiconductors, systems, logic analyzers and other test equipment. Over the next few quarters there will be several important products coming to market that employ the RapidIO interconnect architecture. These products will be met with an infrastructure of FPGA devices, bridge logic, ASIC endpoints, bus functional models, verification suites, bring-up boards, bring-up code, logic and protocol analyzers and semiconductor test equipment. This extraordinary amount of enablement is only possible through the openness of the architecture and the efforts of many good people. The enablement and support that has been put in place for RapidIO will allow products that employ the RapidIO interface to achieve a faster time-to-money and time-to-volume production than would otherwise have been possible.

I remain convinced that the opportunities in the embedded market are sufficiently large and the requirements of the embedded space sufficiently distinct from other markets, support a technology such as RapidIO. As such, RapidIO offers a unique and compelling value proposition for both semiconductor providers and embedded system vendors. The ongoing work in the various task groups within the Technical Working Group will continue adding to the RapidIO value proposition and solidify its role as "The Embedded System Interconnect."

Best regards,

Sam Fuller
