QNX Ramps Up Support for RapidIO® Technology

by Romain Saha, networking segment manager, QNX Software Systems

Since joining the RapidIO Trade Association in May 2001, QNX Software Systems has pursued a three-pronged strategy to drive industry adoption of RapidIO technology.

This strategy actively promotes the benefits of the RapidIO fabric by delivering seminars, webinars, white papers, magazine articles, and product demonstrations throughout North America, Europe, Scandinavia, and the Pacific Rim.

QNX offered early OS support for RapidIO hardware by working hand-in-hand with many members of the RapidIO ecosystem, including Freescale, Silicon Turnkey Express, and Tundra. In addition, the company offers an optimized, off-the-shelf software solution that allows systems designers and engineers to quickly realize the performance and architectural benefits of RapidIO technology.

Why RapidIO?
Why is QNX so committed to RapidIO? The motivation comes from its role as a vendor of tools and real-time operating systems to the networking market. As a result, QNX Software Systems understands first-hand the industry requirement for a fast, reliable, within-the-box interconnects.

Just as important, RapidIO technology acts as a perfect complement to QNX’s flagship product. RapidIO technology has been designed for distributed multiprocessing systems, and offers low latency, deterministic response times, built-in error recovery, and compatibility with a large pool of existing software. As a result, QNX products and RapidIO technology can work in concert to simplify the design of any network element that requires both high availability and high performance.

RapidIO development kit
Already, QNX is working with several major customers on RapidIO implementations for next-generation networking equipment. To provide its customers with the best possible "out of the box" RapidIO experience, it has recently undertaken the following initiatives:

  • The company has announced early support for Freescale's highly integrated MPC8548E PowerQUICC III, the first communications processor to support serial RapidIO technology.
  • QNX partnered with Fabric Embedded Tools Corporation to simplify the configuration of RapidIO systems.

Although RapidIO was designed primarily for networking and communications systems, QNX expects to see uptake among its other target markets as well, including digital video broadcasting, digital signal processing applications (for instance, software defined radio), military systems, and medical diagnostic imaging.
